Towcester Archers 2nd Open WA720 Tournament – UK Record Status

We held our 2nd Open WA720 Tournament on 13th July at Towcestrians Sports Club. This year, for the first time, the event was granted UK Record Status. A UK Record Status competition is one formally registered and approved by Archery GB to meet national standards. This means scores are officially recognised for UK record claims and can count towards archers’ classifications and handicaps. To qualify, tournaments must be run under stricter rules, with qualified judges present, proper timing and scoring systems in place, and the field laid out according to Archery GB regulations. For archers, the benefit is that their scores “count” nationally, whether for records, rankings, or classifications.

The day offered a full range of WA720 rounds, with Single and Double WA70, WA60, WA50 and WA50m (122), as well as Single and Double Metric 122-50, 122-40, 122-30 and Metric 80-40, 80-30. The event ran very smoothly, thanks to the huge amount of work put in beforehand, particularly with the targets in the weeks leading up to this and the NCAS Caswell Series Stage 2 competition. A really big thank you to David M for organising the target rebuilding sessions and ensuring all the stands were repaired or built to the correct height for UKRS tolerances. We were fortunate to have an excellent judging team on the day, Pat Kerrigan, Timothy Pilbeam, and Phyllis Griffiths, who kept the shoot running efficiently and gave us valuable advice on how to improve for the future. Competitors gave us some fantastic feedback about how smoothly everything ran and how much they enjoyed the venue, which is always brilliant to hear.

A big thank you also goes to everyone who pitched in, from setting up the field the evening before to packing away at the end. Your hard work and good spirits made the event a success. The weather also helped, although the wind proved a bit of a challenge for the archers, becoming steadily breezier as the day went on.

The best part of the day was seeing so many club members taking part. In the single rounds, Archie Longley won gold in the Barebow Men Under 14 category in the Metric 122-40 round. Edward Wooldridge-Smith claimed gold in the Recurve Men Under 15 with the Metric 122-50. In the Barebow Men 50+, Paul Scott took silver in only his second competition, with David Whitley close behind in bronze. In the Barebow Men’s category, Neil Bowden narrowly missed gold by just four points. His score of 610 would have been a new county record, but Steven Stark of Rugby Archers edged him out. Jason Mcdill also shot well finishing 4th, while Michelle George secured gold in the Barebow Women 50+. In the Recurve Men 50+, Tony Thurgood took bronze, with Adrian Snowball placing 6th in his first competition and Alex Wooldridge-Smith 7th. In the Recurve Women’s category, Lori Manton shot brilliantly to win gold with 572, while Lucy Stratton finished 5th. In the Recurve Men, Steve Boucher came 4th in only his second open competition. In the double rounds there were more medals for members: Archie (gold), David (silver), Jason (bronze), and Michelle (gold). There is already talk of applying for World Record Status for next year!

Towcester Archers 1st Open WA720 Tournament

Towcester Archers held it’s very first open club competition on Sunday 25th August 2024, held at Towcestrians Sports Club.

The rounds were single and double WA720’s with morning and afternoon sessions.

We would like to thank all the archers for taking part and supporting the event, especially those who travelled in from out of county.

There were some fantastic scores achieved on the day despite the windy conditions, including a number of new Northamptonshire county records.

We hope to see you again next year when we plan to make it a UK Record Status competition.

Towcester Archers v Banbury Cross Archers

On Sunday 28th August we hosted our first competition of sorts, when Banbury Cross Archers visited for the return leg of our inter-club competition.

There was a great turn out from both clubs, and the bank holiday weather gave us perfect conditions. We shot National rounds which involves shooting four dozen at a first distance and then two dozen at a distance 10 yards closer. There were plenty of great scores achieved including several new club records, and so far we know of at least one new Northamptonshire county record score. We managed to win the overall competition between the club this time round also!

The day was a really great club effort, and shows that we’re more than capable of putting on such events in the future.

Banbury Cross Archers v Towcester Archers Inter-Club Tournament

On Sunday 20th February, we had our very first inter-club shoot with Banbury Cross Archers at their indoor venue of Warriner School in Bloxham.

There was enough space for 18 members to take part from each club, and we managed to take a full quota. For several of our members this was their first competition outside of the club, and for the more experienced archers, the first indoor competition for a long time.

Some great scores were achieved including some personal bests and club records, with several members coming away with medals.

A big thank you to everyone at Banbury Cross Archers for putting on a great shoot and making us feel so welcome.

We’re really looking forward to hosting the return leg in the summer.

Towcester Archers at the Northants County Outdoor Championships

Members of Towcester Archers were finally able to enter a local tournament for the first time both since the club was formed and since the pandemic hit and put a stop to everything in March 2020.

The NCAS (Northamptonshire County Archery Society) County & Open Outdoor Championships was held on Sunday 26th September and hosted by Wellingborough Open Archery Club.

Usually the event is a full day single round competition where competitors shoot 144 arrows at the maximum longest distances for age groups. But due to the lack of tournament practice most archers will have had in the county, it was sensibly decided to reduce the number of arrows to half with a choice of morning or afternoon sessions.

We had four of our members take part. Rebecca Stevens won the senior ladies recurve category. Luke Warwick finished in 8th place in the gents recurve. Tony Swinden finished in 10th place in his first competition in over a decade. Current county indoor champion Dean Edwards retired part way though the round.

Along with those taking part, Nick Lee went along as an apprentice judge for the day.

All in all it was a memorable day for the club, and hopefully the first of many to come in the future.

NCAS Charity Shoot – 4th July 2021

A few pics from today’s second leg of the NCAS Charity Shoot in aid of Cransley Hospice. Spirits were high and so were the scores despite the multiple showers.

Many thanks again to everyone who took part in either or both of the NCAS Charity Shoot days, and a big thank you to those who have donated. At the time of writing this, we’ve raised around £380 via JustGiving and members paying on the day.

It’s been so great shooting these rounds together as a club, and to be able to have a few visitors too. Hopefully plenty more shoots to look forward to this summer

Great to be back!

We had our first club session back yesterday, since the restrictions on outdoors sports were lifted a week ago.

The weather was fantastic for it, as members shot on our new temporary field location at Dadford Road Campsite.

The resumption of archery also includes beginners courses and taster sessions, so we are now in the process of organising dates and contacting everyone who has already expressed interest.

Anyone interested in doing a beginners course with us, please get in touch via the short online form: https://towcesterarchers.co.uk/beginners-courses/. Or, send us an email: info@towcesterarchers.co.uk

Our first club session – 2nd August 2020!

After a lot of hard work and patience, we finally had our very first shooting session together as a club, on the morning of Sunday 2nd August 2020.

Literally just three weeks ago, we were very close to knocking the idea of a 2020 start on the head. Very little seemed to be going our way, with only a few months left of the outdoor season, and very little possibility of finding a suitable indoor venue during current restrictions, it was starting to seem pointless. A sensible pause and wait, until the ground works are finally complete next year, allowing us start the club properly at our permanent Towcestrians range.

Thankfully, an opportunity to use Dadford Road Campsite came along for us at just the right time. Despite the added complication of the spectatorless Grand Prix being held at Silverstone on the same first two weekends, and possible access restrictions, our first session took place.

The afternoon before was spent putting the target stands together, measuring out and marking the field with the distances and shooting lanes, in order to comply with current Archery GB guidance for shoot under social distancing.

A big thank you to all involved in getting us here, and to our new members for making this possible.
