Towcester Archers 3rd Open WA720 Tournament

We held our 3rd Open WA720 Tournament at Tows on Sunday 12th July, and this year marked another big step forward with the competition gaining World Record Status (WRS) for the first time.

World Record Status means the event must meet the standards required by World Archery and Archery GB across areas such as field layout, timing, scoring, equipment and judging. The shoot was also a Tier 3 event for the Archery GB National Target Rankings.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make the competition happen, from setting up the field and targets to field party duties and the many jobs needed throughout the day. These events simply couldn’t run without members giving up their time.

We also received some excellent feedback on how well the competition was organised, including praise from the Chair of Judges, which was particularly encouraging for our first WRS event.

Conditions were challenging, with strong and variable winds throughout much of the day, but the event still attracted a strong field, including some of the country’s leading archers.

It was also great to see so many Towcester members competing across recurve, compound, barebow, flatbow and junior categories, with several medals won across the day.

Once again, thank you to everyone involved in making the day such a success.

End of Season Shoot – Pope Young Round!

This year’s End of Season Summer Shoot took place on Sunday 28th September, featuring a Pope Young round, or a slightly relaxed version of it. A big thank you goes to Darren S for organising the round, devising the scoring system and explaining the rules on the day. A big thank you also to Nick for coming along and once again taking the roles of judge and timekeeper, adding his usual playful challenges for winning spot prizes (mostly chocolate!) throughout the afternoon.

For those unfamiliar (most of us), a Pope Young round consists of shooting 36 arrows in ends of six, across six different targets with six shooting positions along the shooting line. One arrow is shot into each target in turn, and the targets vary in distance and scoring systems. After each end, archers must move along one position on the shooting line. To add to the challenge, each end is timed — in the official rules, only 30 seconds are allowed to shoot all six arrows. If an archer didn’t complete all shots in time, 10 points are deducted for each arrow not shot. Luckily, Nick was feeling generous, allowing 60 seconds for the first end and gradually reducing it to 40 seconds by the final end. It was a fantastic afternoon, made even better by the great weather, the chocolate prizes, the brilliantly devised targets, and excellent timekeeping! A special mention for David T, who chose the Pope Young as his first club session after joining the club following the last beginners course, and did very well!

Once again, a big thank you to Darren and Nick for running such a brilliant afternoon, we hope to make this an annual event!

Annual Club Handicap Competition

On 7th September, as part of our outdoor season, we ran our annual fun handicap competition for club members, kindly organised by David & Heather. As last year the
competition was Western rounds (that’s four dozen arrows at the longer distance, followed by another four dozen at a shorter one).

The shoot was quite well attended and kicked off in pleasant conditions, although the weather became very blustery as the afternoon went on, adding an extra challenge for
everyone on the line! Spirits stayed high though, especially with a welcome break halfway through for drinks and one of Heather’s delicious homemade cakes (or two!).

Handicap shoots are a brilliant way to bring all archers together, as they allow different bowstyles, age groups, and genders to compete on equal terms. As long as each archer has submitted three qualifying scores beforehand to Golden Records, they will have a handicap rating. With the help of the Archery GB handicap tables, everyone’s scores are balanced out, meaning seniors can shoot against juniors, barebows against recurves, and so on, all on a level playing field.

It was a great afternoon despite the wind, and we’d love to run another similar event in the indoor season. Engraved trophies were awarded to the winners, who were:

Archie – Overall and Junior Winner (adjusted score – 1497)
Alasdair – Gents Winner (adjusted score – 1488)
Michelle – Ladies Winner (adjusted score – 1430)

Many thanks once again to David and Heather for organising another highly enjoyable club handicap shoot.

Towcester Archers 2nd Open WA720 Tournament – UK Record Status

We held our 2nd Open WA720 Tournament on 13th July at Towcestrians Sports Club. This year, for the first time, the event was granted UK Record Status. A UK Record Status competition is one formally registered and approved by Archery GB to meet national standards. This means scores are officially recognised for UK record claims and can count towards archers’ classifications and handicaps. To qualify, tournaments must be run under stricter rules, with qualified judges present, proper timing and scoring systems in place, and the field laid out according to Archery GB regulations. For archers, the benefit is that their scores “count” nationally, whether for records, rankings, or classifications.

The day offered a full range of WA720 rounds, with Single and Double WA70, WA60, WA50 and WA50m (122), as well as Single and Double Metric 122-50, 122-40, 122-30 and Metric 80-40, 80-30. The event ran very smoothly, thanks to the huge amount of work put in beforehand, particularly with the targets in the weeks leading up to this and the NCAS Caswell Series Stage 2 competition. A really big thank you to David M for organising the target rebuilding sessions and ensuring all the stands were repaired or built to the correct height for UKRS tolerances. We were fortunate to have an excellent judging team on the day, Pat Kerrigan, Timothy Pilbeam, and Phyllis Griffiths, who kept the shoot running efficiently and gave us valuable advice on how to improve for the future. Competitors gave us some fantastic feedback about how smoothly everything ran and how much they enjoyed the venue, which is always brilliant to hear.

A big thank you also goes to everyone who pitched in, from setting up the field the evening before to packing away at the end. Your hard work and good spirits made the event a success. The weather also helped, although the wind proved a bit of a challenge for the archers, becoming steadily breezier as the day went on.

The best part of the day was seeing so many club members taking part. In the single rounds, Archie Longley won gold in the Barebow Men Under 14 category in the Metric 122-40 round. Edward Wooldridge-Smith claimed gold in the Recurve Men Under 15 with the Metric 122-50. In the Barebow Men 50+, Paul Scott took silver in only his second competition, with David Whitley close behind in bronze. In the Barebow Men’s category, Neil Bowden narrowly missed gold by just four points. His score of 610 would have been a new county record, but Steven Stark of Rugby Archers edged him out. Jason Mcdill also shot well finishing 4th, while Michelle George secured gold in the Barebow Women 50+. In the Recurve Men 50+, Tony Thurgood took bronze, with Adrian Snowball placing 6th in his first competition and Alex Wooldridge-Smith 7th. In the Recurve Women’s category, Lori Manton shot brilliantly to win gold with 572, while Lucy Stratton finished 5th. In the Recurve Men, Steve Boucher came 4th in only his second open competition. In the double rounds there were more medals for members: Archie (gold), David (silver), Jason (bronze), and Michelle (gold). There is already talk of applying for World Record Status for next year!

Towcester Archers 1st Open WA720 Tournament

Towcester Archers held it’s very first open club competition on Sunday 25th August 2024, held at Towcestrians Sports Club.

The rounds were single and double WA720’s with morning and afternoon sessions.

We would like to thank all the archers for taking part and supporting the event, especially those who travelled in from out of county.

There were some fantastic scores achieved on the day despite the windy conditions, including a number of new Northamptonshire county records.

We hope to see you again next year when we plan to make it a UK Record Status competition.

Towcester Archers host Stage 3 of the NCAS Caswell Series

On Sunday 28th July we hosted our first ever open competition, answering the call from the county earlier in the year asking for clubs to host this years stages of the NCAS Caswell Series.

And if you’re going to host a competition, it might as well be a UK Record Status event right?!

Holding one of the Caswell series shoots at Towcestrians was actually quite apt, as the original Caswell tournaments were started just up the road by the workers as the Caswell Research Centre back in the 1950’s.

Overall the day ran brilliantly, and Towcestrians is a perfect venue for a hosting a competition with great facilities including the bar being open in the afternoon.

A big thank you to all the participants, the judges, and the members of Towcester Archers who helped out on the day. We’ll certainly put ourselves forward to host this event again next year.
